How to free up iPhone storage safely
Start with Apple’s storage overview, remove downloads and unused apps you understand, then review media manually. Storage cleanup works best as a sequence of small, verifiable decisions.
1. Measure before deleting
Open Settings → General → iPhone Storage. Wait for the category chart and recommendations to finish calculating. Record the largest categories so you solve the actual constraint instead of deleting random files.
2. Clear replaceable downloads
Downloaded podcasts, music, streaming video, offline maps and Files downloads are usually safer first targets because they can often be downloaded again. Confirm that anything important is available elsewhere before removal.
3. Review apps separately
Offloading an app removes the app binary while retaining its documents and data; deleting an app can remove its local data. Read the iOS confirmation and make sure the app’s data is synced or backed up before choosing.
4. Audit large videos and screenshots
Large videos can produce meaningful savings quickly. Screenshots are usually easier to judge than family photos. Sort review work into understandable groups and avoid automatic bulk deletion.
5. Protect recovery paths
Keep a current backup of irreplaceable media. Review Recently Deleted before permanently emptying it. Remember that items in Recently Deleted can still occupy storage during Apple’s recovery window.
